Monday 10 March - Minor update to the calendar - changes in Townsville events, more info on the Rockwheelers site.
Sunday March 2 - Calendar is now up in both formats. Please note that the column named 'Organiser" is where your name will go when you volunteer to run an event. Of course, if there is no organiser for an event, there won't be an event... The PDF version of the calendar has information on all associated events (rogaine, major XC events, triathlons etc) which do not necessarily appear on the calendar page.
Friday February 29 - The calendar is now posted (in PDF format only) on the Calendar page. All the info relative to Club events will be reformatted into the normal table style some time over the weekend. Thanks to Normie for putting all this together!
Saturday February 23 - Sunday 2nd March is 'Clean Up Australia' Day, and one of the areas for cleanup is Smithfield. Please meet at the McGregor Road trailhead at 10.00 am and we'll see if we can't get some of the rubbish out of there.
Also, a message from Adrian Borsje - There will be a cleanup at Smithfield tomorrow (Sunday Feb 24) at 3.00pm, whippershipping some of the affected trails, so if you can be there your help would be appreciated.
If you haven't had any input into the calendar, you're almost too late- you've only got until Tuesday to talk to Normie... Don't assume that the one on the calendar page is correct, there may be minor tweaks to be published in the final version.
Tuesday February 12 - The draft calendar is now available from the Calendar page. This calendar will remain as a draft for comment for two weeks (until Tuesday February 26) and will become final at that time with additions/amendments as required.
Saturday February 9 - A reminder about the meeting Tuesday evening - see item below. If you're not going to be there, and haven't contacted someone from the Management Committee about what races / events you want or what you are prepared to do for 2008, well...
Sunday January 20 - There will be a meeting on Tuesday 12th February at 7.15pm to set the calendar for the season. The meeting will be held at the rear of Geo Pickers (Cnr Mulgrave Road and Brown Street, Cairns). All interested parties - this is your chance to have a say in what goes on for this year and what part you are going to play in making it a success!
Monday 24 December - The Executive of the Cairns Mountain Bike Club would like to wish all our members, sponsors, friends and acquaintances a safe and happy festive season.
Sunday 25 November - Following yesterday's AGM and All Mountain Challenge, results can be found here, photos can be found here and videos can be found here and here. Are we organised, or what?
Saturday 24 November - The Annual General Meeting of the Club was held today, including elections for the Management Committee. The previous Management Committee of Mal Lindsay (President), Gordon Greaves (Secretary) and Barbara Meade (Treasurer) along with Michael Norman (Race Director) was re-elected unopposed. The Club's major awards were handed out, as well as the medallions and trophies for the year's racing:
Encouragement Award: Jack Druery
Most Improved (Tie): Bernard Cossar-Smith & Vicky Johnston
Junior Rider of the Year: Adrian Dawson
Senior Rider of the Year: Tim O'Dwyer
Club Member of the Year: Gordon Dixon
Following the AGM, members were invited to nominate what tasks they were prepared to assist the Club with, and our thanks to all those who were prepared to put their names down on paper.
That concludes the racing for the Club for this season, keep your eyes on this site for information on what comes next...
Saturday 17 November - Everything you wanted to know about the AGM/Trophy Presentations/All Mountain Challenge but were afraid to ask:
POSTER DELETED, NO LONGER REQUIRED
Sunday 11 November - DH4...
It wouldn’t be a downhill race without drama of some kind, the first for the day was a freak 45 minute downpour during setup, the second a few unexpected problems with shuttle transport which forced us to shorten the race to start from below the rock garden. The mention of a stroll up the hill pushing a bike sent a few packing for a quieter Sunday. For those who stayed, we managed to sort it out and eventually had transport to get everyone up the hill. The transport situation is something the committee is looking at and we will look for different options in 2008. This is most likely to mean an increase in entry fees to ensure we can get vehicles for each race.
Anyway, the racing was great as usual, the timing system did its job and you can check out the results on the Results page. We have also updated the overall places for the 2007 series and an important note that to be awarded a trophy you had to compete in a minimum of 2 events (Junior U13 and U15 categories are exempt).
The next event will be the All Mountain Challenge bundled in with the trophy presentation and the club AGM on Saturday 24th November. Keep checking the website for more information on start times and some changes to the club structure and new positions we will be looking to fill for 2008.
Thanks again to all the volunteers for donating your time and making sure events like these continue to happen and all the riders for coming out and having fun. See you all on the 24th.
Normie.
Tuesday November 6 - Normie's information on this weekend's DH4 event is now posted on the Race Notes page.
Thursday November 1 - The Croc Trophy is over for another year, with Mauro Bettins taking the win. Final positions for our guys as below. The first person to cross the finish line was Marc Herremans, as everyone else gave him the honour of doing so. Story here - well worth reading - and some final pictures below (click to enlarge). All pictures and race report © John Flynn :

Wednesday 31 October - Croc Trophy, Stage 9 (click to enlarge). Dave Wood is 16th in Elite, Struan Lamont is 12th in M1 and Scott McLennan is hanging onto 5th in M2. Marc Herremans is still in the event - just think about that. There was some doubt about him completing the event because of pressure sores from sitting down and not being able to feel anything. One stage left to go...

Monday 29 October - Some images from today's Stage 7 of the Croc Trophy (click to enlarge). Please note the third pic - Marc Herremans (Belgium) is paralysed from the waist down, and pedals with his hands. And he's still in the event...

Sunday 29 October - There is a pic of the finished catch net on the Trails & Maintenance Page, it covers most of the entrance and the exit of the corner with the drop and will stop riders from going over the edge. Normie would suggest to all riders that while it is there for their safety, staying on the track is a much better option...
A reminder of the working bee for next weekend, as expected didn’t get many turn out yesterday. We managed to get the catch net and a small section of bench in the rock garden done. Work to be done for the next race is:
If I'm reading the results correctly (no mean feat...) Scott McLennan is running fifth in his class (M2) in the Croc Trophy after 6 stages, Dave Wood is 15th in Elite with his team (Flight Centre) running 2nd behind the Dream Team, Struan Lamont is 9th in M1. Mick Hannah didn't start the event because his bike didn't arrive in time.
Monday 22 October - It's now safe to go look at the XC final results, now that the link points to the correct file... Sorry about that.
Croc Trophy starts tomorrow, and more info can be found here. Club members Dave Wood, Struan Lamont and Scott McLennan are competing, and Mick Hannah is on the startlist but I've heard he's not taking part. Keep your eyes on the linked page (these guys are nuts...)
Saturday October 20

Downhill working bees
will be held on Saturday 27/10 and Saturday 3/11 both starting at 1.00PM, in
preparation for the final DH race of the season on the Sunday 11/11. Meet at

Monday October 15 - Corrected DH Series points have been posted on the Results page - we managed to miss a class...
Sunday October 14 - (Amended) XC4 is over and done with, as is the XC calendar for the year. Photos are available now, results now on the Results page.
It's that time of year again - the Annual General Meeting is approaching and the awards get handed out. For those who are new to the Club, we have several awards that we hand out that have, over the last few years, been decided by the members of the Club.
We do not run an on-line poll, that would take away the element of surprise at the AGM. Instead, you get to nominate a person in each of the categories (listed below). You send your nomination by email to the Club address info@cairnsmtb.com (only). You may nominate a person in each category, or only one category, or any combination.
As this is a 'Club thing', you must be a paid-up member of the Club to vote, therefore your email MUST include your full name so that it can be checked against Club records. One vote per category per member only.
Please look at overall performance, not just a single race or even a single category. For example, someone may not have won a race all year, but they may have taken part in all the downhills, all the XC races including the H8H and the RRR, and all the AMCs (nobody has, so don't bother looking - but you get what I mean)
Also bear in mind that not all our members have raced much at home - at least three have been racing overseas: Tracey Hannah, Mick Hannah and Struan Lamont have competed successfully at non-CMTBC events.
The categories are:
Junior Rider of the Year (U19 and under)
Rider of the Year (19 and over)
Club Member of the Year (doesn't need to be a rider)
Most Improved Rider (any age)
Encouragement Award (any age)
The Executive Committee (President, Treasurer, Secretary plus the Race Director) reserves the right to over-rule any or all of the nominations... This will only happen in exceptional circumstances, of course.
The AGM is on the 24th November at Smithfield, so nominations close on 10th November at 5.00pm. Late nominations cannot be accepted.
Sunday October 7 - Don't forget XC4 coming up this weekend (13th October) starts at 3.00pm as requested by the riders - it's starting to get a bit warmer around here... If you can't find any Race Notes here, go look on the forum, but basically it will start from the McGregor Road trailhead at 3.00pm Saturday arvo and run for a maximum of two hours for Expert class riders, shorter time for other classes.
Assistance will be needed on the day - if you are not racing, please volunteer to assist, or if you are in the Junior classes volunteer your parents to assist. Races don't run themselves. This applies to all races...
Don't forget the deadline for comment on the MTX track is the 9th. If you haven't given Charlie or Berend your input by then, you may well miss out. We need to get the plans to EPA pronto so that we can get approval for the repairs.
This website will not be updated for the next week - I'll be in Brisbane until Friday. If you have any queries, contact Mal or Normie, or better yet - use the forum. Gordon
Tuesday October 2 - Everything should be working properly now - it's amazing how much difference one capital letter makes!
Sunday September 30 - After all this time of working with the website, I got bored and had an hour or two to spare, so...
Tuesday September 25 - The revised results of DH3 have been posted on the Results page. The Series points are also posted. That's still the last time Normie is allowed out of town on a race weekend!
Check out the Trails & Maintenance page for news on the new MTX track being coordinated by Berend and Charlie!
Sunday September 23 - DH3 has been run and won, we'll get the details to you as soon as possible. Photos are available in the usual place. It would have been nice if a few people had stayed to help pack up...
Wednesday September 18 - Information on DH3 can be found on the Race Notes page or in the Forum.
Tuesday September 11 - The day the Section 38 Agreement between the Environmental Protection Agency and the Cairns Mountain Bike Club was formally handed over by Steve Wettenhall MP, Member for Barron River, on behalf of the State Government and the Environmental Protection Agency. Now the work really begins...

Huge thanks to Gordon Dixon and his team at Downunder Tours for taking on all the paperwork necessary to get us this far, and to Mal for the enormous amount of work he put in to make it happen. You really don't know how much you owe these guys... (and thanks to Jay for not breaking Steve when he took him for a ride!)
Monday September 10 - Tracey Hannah took out third place in the Elite Women's Downhill Championship at Fort William in Scotland overnight, on a track that doesn't really suit her riding style and with no rear brakes (corrected). Mick Hannah finished in 11th place after the weather turned into something you would expect from El Arish during Cyclone Larry after having qualified in fourth place. Mick says he was landing in two-wheel drifts, the wind was so strong. Sabrina Jonnier took out the Women's title, while Sam Hill kept the Aussie flag flying in Men's. Results on the UCI website here.
