ARCHIVE #8

Welcome to www.cairnsmtb.com!

Sunday 20 November - The Poker Ride was a great success, with Struan Lamont winning with four Aces. He also had one of the better crashes of the day (certainly the first!) and made it almost look too easy. Pictures are now up in the usual place.

Next up - the AGM. Details above.

Wednesday 16 November - Check out the Stories page for a great write-up on the 2005 Crocodile Trophy by our own Struan Lamont, a competitor in the event.

Lost a camera at Smithfield? Contact us...

Tuesday 15 November - Don't forget the Poker Ride at Pilba Peak this Sunday starting at 9.30 am, registration from 9.00am. Cheap, too...

Wednesday 9 November - Nominations are closed for Rider of the Year and Club Member of the Year, and everything is in the hands of the trophy manufacturers/engravers. We made some adjustments in the trophy count, so there are going to be some surprises at the AGM. You'll just have to be there to find out what we did, won't you?

For the AGM, please BYO chair! Don't forget, it will be a freebie sausage sizzle, and we would like to see as many people riding the trails as possible, so don't forget to BYO bike. There will be limited drinks available at no charge, as well as other bits 'n pieces that are getting close to their use-by date. The AGM will only be short, and will include a progress report from Gordon Dixon on negotiations to get back into the MTB Park area.

Tuesday 8 November - And now for something completely different! Click on the 'Stories' button on the left and check out Normie's latest contribution...

Tuesday 1 November - Congratulations to Club members David Wood and Struan Lamont, and Cairns riders Adam Hansen and Tim Northey for their results in the Croc Trophy! Well done, guys!

Just when you thought you were all XC'ed out, Dan Foley is running another Poker Ride at Pilba Peak on Sunday morning, 20th November. Registration is at 9.00am and the ride starts at 9.30am. He tells me there has been a small bulldozer wandering around the place, and there are 'new bits'. The event is for solo or teams. For further info, contact Dan direct on 0439 930 128.

Saturday 29 October - The (corrected) results of today's final round of the Club XC Championships are now available on the Results page, and the photos are available at www.gordong.com. Funny about that, the Expert Ladies rider finished ahead of the Expert Men...

Series points are also available on the Results page

Tuesday 25 October - Struan Lamont, Dave Wood, Adam Hansen and Tim Northey are all riding the event billed as the toughest off road MTB race in the world - the Croc Trophy. Last years winner Adam Hansen is currently race leader, Struan & Tim are in the same team (Cairns Coconut Resort Simplon) and Dave Wood is riding with the main contenders, the Dream Team. Daily updates by former Cairns rider John Flynn can be found on the www.cyclingnews.com web site.

The last major stage finishes in Daintree Saturday 29th October around lunch time and there will also be a short final stage in Port Douglas on Sunday 30th October. Go up and cheer for the local riders – after 12 days of racing they will appreciate the support.

Unless, of course, you are at XC4, our last competitive event for the year at Smithfield Saturday afternoon - registration from 1.30pm and racing (2 hours) from 3.00pm.

Monday 17 October - Results for XC3 corrected - the kids got left off the PDF file... Sorry 'bout dat!

Sunday 16 October - Okay, so I didn't get the results/photos of XC3 up last night: it had been a long day. Anyway, everything is now in place, including the points score for the series, race results and lap times and all the pretty pictures in the usual place. Wes Reibel lapped almost the field in his last Club race for the year, while at the other end of the scale U15 rider Daniel Boyce got a flat way out on the circuit, changed the tube and found he had the wrong pump - pushed his bike all the way back to the start, got the tyre pumped up and got back in the race, completing four laps! Thanks to Barbara for doing the scoring!

The final round of the XC series is in two weeks, and has been changed to a two-hour race, not three. It's just too hot out there for most riders, even without the Black Snake section.

Wednesday 12 October - Don't forget Round 3 of the XC Series is this Saturday, starting from McGregor Road trailhead. Registrations from 1.30pm, racing from 3.00pm. Let's see how big a turnout we can get for it!

Sunday 2nd October - And that's the end of the Downhill season... A pity it was so short, but at least we got some racing in after it was looking like we wouldn't have any for the whole year. A big thank you to Miles for making his track available to us, and those who were prepared to make the slog down there certainly got some interesting racing! Especially Alan Betts, who suffered a double break to his collarbone today, and Miles himself, who, under intense pressure from Sean McCarroll, set the first ever sub-2 minute time down the hill.

Results and times are now available, thanks to Normie who not only did the timing but also collated everything and did the spreadsheet for the Championship. Photos are also available, in the usual place. The 'sequence' photos will take a few nights to put together, I'll let you know when they are done.

Tuesday 27 September - Don't forget the final round of the Club DH Championship this Sunday at El Arish! You must compete in at least two rounds to qualify for a trophy, and this is the third and last round...

Registration from 9.00am, racing from 12.00noon so that everyone can be back in Cairns in time to watch the Cowboys thrash that other mob (and no, I don't follow football :)

Saturday 17 September - Wes Reibel added to his collection of recent wins by taking out the Expert class at the Club XC Championship Round 2 today. Another of those races that conflicted with just about everything else on the calendar, but still saw a pretty good roll-up for the event. Shortened to 1.5 hours, because only Wes wanted to race any longer than that!

Full results are on the Results page, Championship points have been updated and the pics are up at www.gordong.com (I had nothing else to do...)

Friday 16 September - Final results for the RRR have now been posted on the Results page. There is still one finisher that I've been unable to resolve, but no-one has complained about it so the results as published today will be final and no further correspondence will be entered into on the matter...

See you tomorrow (Saturday 17th) at Smithfield for Round 2 of the XC series. Is it really only Round 2? Seems like we've been doing major XC stuff for ages, but the H8H and the RRR don't count towards the Club series. Registrations from about 1.00pm, racing from 3.00pm when it gets a tad cooler.

Effective today, the RRR-Classic web site has been closed (no-one was looking there anyway) and it's now part of the menu on your left.

Sunday 4 September - A smallish field at El Arish for DH Round 3 where the weather was brilliant (sunburnt again, dammit...) and some really quick times down the hill. Results, Club placings and times are now available on the Results page, and the photos are at www.gordong.com

Wednesday 31 August - We're aware of a couple of minor problems with the RRR results, and they will be fixed shortly - just as soon as we're sure we've got all we can figure out. Please bear with us on this, it was such a huge turnout that we're not in the least bit surprised.

Channel 7 Cairns will have a short piece on tonight's local news regarding the future of the Smithfield MountainBike Park. Don't expect any astonishing revelations, though!

Don't forget there's a Downhill this Sunday at El Arish. Let's hope the weather stays okay this time round. This is Round 3 of the Club championships. We still have to come up with a date for the missing Round 2, but we're working on it. Please note that our host for the weekend, Miles Mead, will be having a Garage Sale of various bits and pieces! It's amazing what some of these guys accumulate...

Sunday 28 August - Wes Reibel today took out the 16th running of the RRR Classic Point-to-Point Race from Mt Molloy to Port Douglas in a time of 1:23:06 in windy, wet conditions. Kim Kelleher took out the Ladies section of the event in a time of 1:41:36. Full results and race times for all riders are now available on the Results page, and photos are now up at www.gordong.com

Wednesday 24 August - The results/lap times of the Herberton 8-Hour are now available from the H8H page in PDF format. Apologies for the delay, but Leonie had an enormous amount of work to do to get everything in a readable form. Don't forget to thank her and her crew next time you see them. Which might be...

...at the RRR Classic this weekend. Don't forget, Vain's Oval at Mount Molloy is registration, and all the details are available from the poster on the right.
