2012 Club Championships DH2 Report

Dust.
Lots of it.

DH2 was raced on sunday, with quite the opposite conditions met trackside compared to DH1.
The mud and sludge were swapped for foot deep powder and braking ruts. Run after run, lines changed, rocks moved, holes got deeper. But times got quicker.
Massive effort put in by Townsville rider Peter Knott once again taking number 1 with a blistering time of 2:50.45.
Huge thanks once again to all the fantastic volunteers. The shuttle bunnies, SES, St.Johns, the food gals, timing, starting, marshals, race directors and of course the fantastic crew at Discovery Cycles; our 2012 series sponsors.
Get out there, get riding! DH3 is only 3 weeks away. September 2nd, bring your dads for a jolly good day!

2012 Club Championships DH1 | Race Report

2012 Club Championships DH 1.

Well, what a day. 2012 started off slowly for the DH cohort. The rain, although not overly severe this wet season caused headache after headache, in the form of landslip after landslip. Several slips blocked access to the top of the course, along with a few coming down over the track. Craig and his team of loyal subjects worked against nature and re-opened the track to prim condition once again while we waited for the rain to ease so the road could be looked to. After a few postponements and some last minute (literally) repairs to weather-proof the road, it was rain hail or shine for race day.
Short numbers aside, this was a race to be proud of. We cannot thank the people who made the day happen enough.

As the first practise shuttle for the day made their way up the hill the skies opened and within minutes, the hill was SOAKED. Riders making their way down the track expecting clean, tacky conditions were instead treated to an all-out mud bath. Fearful of a disaster and mass evacuation of riders, instead it was beaming smiles and cheers/shouts/screams/hoots of joy as they came to the bottom blown away by the sheer levels of both added complexity and enjoyment the rain offered the course.

With that worry gone, the next was back onto the access road. With the Hannah’s Tonka truck pulled out of duty, a few willing riders gave up the use of their own vehicles to brave the rain-soaked road. With a smart head, careful driving and co-ordinated movements they pushed up. As the rain eased, the road got worse, turning into a greasy, slippery, seemingly impassable climb to the top. But the change of track conditions lured everyone too much to quit now, it was race or die trying.

The shuttles made it up for both race runs, and racing went off without a hitch. The track slowly starting to find more grip as every rider went down, until the berms turned into “those speed-up things you drive over on Mario Kart”. Despite the mud, the rain and the super slippery roots, riders managed to find grip in corners never once thought to be grippy.
A big congratulation to the category winners, racing was tight and surprisingly close considering conditions. (Results are attached!)

And the most important part… A HUGE thankyou to the truly dedicated volunteers and helpers who made the day happen. SES, St Johns, race co-ordinators, MC-Cripple, all the volunteer marshals, the brave shuttle drivers, timers and food ladies. And a special thankyou to Larry and Stacey from Discovery cycles, our main series sponsors. Who kindly donated the material needed to fix the road in a last minute effort, and also for offering the services of the team car to help the shuttle the riders. The race could not have gone smoother and you all deserve to be proud of yourselves.
Hope to see you all for the DH2!
